Poo Mobile

The Piaggio Ape was aesthetically reworked by Hungry Castle and forms part of their exploration into the world’s most enduring, endearing and weird emoji.

Yes, the poo emoji. It’s rendered in every smartphone operating system but the presentation of the first ever Poo Mobile generated immense anticipation. It was unveiled at the KR Store Backyard in Barcelona in October 2014.

Automobiles play a big role in the appearance of our surroundings and Apes are a common sight in Barcelona. The unusual look draws attention but surprisingly their surface often remains white. Hungry Castle sought to fill the blank canvas and transform this particular vehicle into a unique work of art.

Working with German designer Jonas Weber, the bodywork and mini interior was decorated with bright, lively colours. Featuring rolling, sweeping lines and a swirling polystyrene/resin sculpture attached to the roof; the Poo Mobile exudes a boisterous sense of play. The right side bears the word ‘Cool’. The left hand side displays the word ‘Shit’. Like people's poo emoji usage, the making-of process was about implementing the vaguely ridiculous on a 3D element. All the emoji’s impressions of life and joy are embodied by the Poo Mobile.

The sculpture is supported by a homogeneous range of clothing designed by Hungry Castle. It has also inspired the performance art piece Mr. Poo - a portrait artist the draws everyone as smiling poop heads and the art happening known as the Poo Party - an impromptu block party where people dance in lots of different coloured poo masks.
